Pantheon
The pantheon of Middle Earth in hierarchical order can be imagined like the following.
Eru Ilúvatar
The supreme being and creator of all existence, said to exist eternally outside of and beyond the world.
The Ainur:
They were created from Ilúvatar’s thoughts before anything else and are the powers of Arda imagined in spirit form. Being privy and inspired by their “father’s” thoughts they sung the universe (Eä) into existence. Some chose to enter the world that they had so created and taking on the form of elves, men and other shapes of nature acted as guardians and guides, rather than lords and masters. However, most of them are said to have turned their backs on Middle Earth and to have withdrawn to the continent of Aman in the West.
-> Melkor/Morgoth Bauglir, Lord of Darkness
Considered the greatest of all Ainur he is not numbered among the Valar after he defied Ilúvatar’s will, attempted to steal the source of his creative energy and disrupted the music of creation.
-> Valar
The Lords of the Valar
Manwë Súlimo, The King of the Wind and lord of Air and Clouds, considered the greatest among the Valar, said to dwell on top of the highest mountain of the world, Mount Taniquetil
Ulmo, The King of the Sea and lord Water, said to dwell in the deepest waters of the ocean
Aulë, The Smith and lord of Earth and Crafts, creator of the dwarves
